Starting our study of Revelation 20.
Revelation 20:1 ‘And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain.’
This chapter flows on from the previous without a break. The beast and the false prophet have been thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulphur and the kings of the earth and their armies are killed in the Battle of Armageddon.
Then an angel comes down to deal with the dragon, the ancient serpent.
Revelation 20:2 ‘He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil, or Satan and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss and locked and sealed it over him to keep him from deceiving the nations any more until the thousand years were ended.’
The dragon is well and truly dealt with. He has spent his time deceiving the nations but no more.
Revelation 12:9 ‘The great dragon was hurled down – that ancient called the devil or Satan who leads the whole world astray.’
2 Corinthians 4:4 ‘The god of this age has blinded the minds so that they cannot see the light of the glory of Christ.’
Ephesians 2:2 ‘….the spirit who is at work in all those who are disobedient.’
Satan has always sought to deceive mankind, from the garden of Eden until now. Throughout the church age he has continued his nefarious work and I was very much a victim of his deceptions myself.
However, his deceptive ways will come to an end when Christ Jesus returns and he is thrown into the abyss. He will be bound, locked, sealed and kept. for a thousand years.
Revelation 20:3b ‘After that he must be set free for a short time.’
For a thousand blessed years the world will be freed from the deceptions of the enemy. After that there will be a brief time of rebellion, which will once more go badly for the enemy, and he will then be dealt with permanently.
