Revelation 13 The beast emerges

Beginning our study of Revelation 13.

Revelation 13:1 And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea.’

This must rate as being one of the most sinister of verses.

Theologians will debate whether the ‘beast’ here describes the spirit of the antichrist, the antichrist himself or his empire. This essay describes the antichrist himself.

Here we see Satan, ushering in his human agent or representative on this earth. This man will surrender himself completely to the enemy and allow himself to be completely taken over by him. He will come to be known as the end-time antichrist.

Satan has always expressed himself through individuals in world history. Pharaoh, Antiochus Epiphanes, and Adolf Hitler are three very obvious examples. They are ‘types’ pointing towards an end-time individual, the antichrist, who will be the ultimate expression of satanic evil.

There is a comparison to be made with Luke 4:5 where Jesus is tempted in the desert by the devil to assume his authority and splendour.

Luke 4:5  ‘The devil led him up to a high place and showed him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said, ‘I will give you all their authority and splendour, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours.’

Jesus rebuked the devil’s offer.

The end-time antichrist, the beast of Revelation 13, will willingly accept everything that the devil brings to the table, despite the terrible consequences that it will bring upon him. He will assume Satan’s power and authority but it will be a poison that will lead to his demise.

Satan, the red dragon, is clearly described in Revelation 12:3, with his heads, horns and crowns and the beast of Revelation 13:1 has an almost identical description.

The antichrist beast is therefore a sordid product of Satan, the red dragon, a distorted prodigy who will go forth with authority to do his master’s corrupt bidding. This is the antichrist.

Please click image to reaf full post and scroll down. If you struggle with the horror of Revelation then you are certainly not alone. The absolute horror reflects the weight of sin that has corrupted man to the core.  But as we embrace these sacred truths, they will bring us deeper, far deeper than ever before, into an understanding of the heart, into an understanding of the perfect holiness of God.
  • Revelation 15:3 Moses and Jesus
Please tap image to see full post The mention of both Moses and Jesus the Lamb in the same sentence strengthens the idea that Jesus will be the perfect Moses, who will deliver Israel, imprisoned or exiled by the antichrist and lead them victoriously back to Jerusalem.
  • Revelation 15:1 Glass and Fire
The bitterness of martyrdom gives way to eternal celebration. Their victory has always been dependent upon the strength that God provides and this is reflected in the harps given to them by God.  And what a glorious celebration. The enemy has been defeated and the bowls of wrath will bring this evil age to a conclusion. The joy of eternity awaits!

Those who hold to the idea that Jesus is a humble servant will be stretched by the description of Jesus as the mighty bloody warrior.

In the past few posts we have explored the corn harvest which I suggested will be the harvest of the redeemed and then the grape harvest which is clearly the wrath of God being poured out upon the wicked.  God will inspire the antichrist to march against Jerusalem but it will be a foolish move.
