A prayer for Afghanistan and for those who understandably feel discouraged and frightened by recent events.
Psalm 33:1 ‘Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. Praise the Lord with the harp, make musicto him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully and shout for joy.’
May a spirit of praise and worship be lifted up amongst the hearts of the Christians in Afghanistan, even though their praise may need to be covert and sung under their breath, may it be joyous and contagious.
Psalm 33:4 ‘For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The Lord loves righteouness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.’
May the unfailing love of the Lord wash over Afghanistan and over the hearts of these dear brothers and sisters. May righteousness and justice come.
Psalm 33:6 ‘By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke and it came to be; he commanded and it stood firm.’
May our dear brothers and sisters gaze up into the Afghani night-time sky and know the deep wonder of the creation and the Creator himself.
Psalm 33:10 ‘The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.’
May the Lord’s plans for Afghanistan stand firm and true whilst the plans of invading forces crumble to dust.
Psalm 33:12 ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance. From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind, from his dwelling place he watches all who live on the earth – he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.’
May the Lord watch over our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan, his beloved inheritance. may God watch over everything they do.
Psalm 33:16 ‘No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance, despite all its great strength it cannot save,’
May the invading forces be broken in strength, may they be brought to their knees, and in that weakness may they come know the true saviour, the true light of this world.
Psalm 33:18 ‘But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.’
May our brothers and sisters look to the Lord for provision and may this come miraculously, like manna from heaven. May the supplies being delivered multiply in the hands of those who receive.
Psalm 33:20 ‘We wait in hope for the Lord, he is our help and our shield. In him we rejoice for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us O Lord, even as we put our hope in you.’
Lord, we pray this psalm over the peoples of Afghanistan, may they look to you and may you be their unfailing love and hope.
