Laodicea 3

Hi we have been exploring Revelation 2&3 and this is my third post on Jesus’ letter to the church in Laodicea. To read my earlier posts please check down at the bottom of this post for a full list.

Revelation 3:17  ‘You say, “I am rich. I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing,”

Jesus really cuts to the chase with this comment. It is remarkably easy to judge and assess ourselves and come to the conclusion that we are spiritually doing quite well. We may be regular church attendees, pay our taxes and read our bibles and consider that we are making the grade.

But when we compare ourselves to Christ Jesus then our self-assessment  falls apart. The first verse in this letter describes Jesus as the faithful and true witness who walked the path to Calvary. How many of us have fallen at the very first step!

Jesus ruthlessly strips away our self-assessment in this letter, not because he wants to discourage us but rather because he wants us to be honest with ourselves, so that in our poverty we might reach for his golden riches.

Oh Lord, my we be hungry for your genuine golden riches!

Tomorrow we explore how poverty is the gateway to great riches. To get there now please click HERE.
