Hi we have been exploring Revelation 2&3 and this is the first post on Jesus’ letter to the church in Laodicea. To read my earlier posts please check down at the bottom of this post for a full list.
Revelation 3:14 ‘To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.’
As with all the letters, Jesus begins with a description of himself. Jesus is the faithful and true witness who did not turn back and who did not deny his heavenly Father and the gospel that he was entrusted with. He resolutely walked to Gethsemane and suffered the cross for all mankind.
By contrast, during his ministry years, many turned back and rejected Christ Jesus.
John 6:66 ‘From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.’
Jesus also prophesied that in the end-times there would be a large falling away of the faithful.
Matthew 24:10 ‘At that time, many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.’
And so Jesus is the perfectly faithful and true witness but yet many have turned away and will do so in the future.
Remember that Revelation 3:14 speaks of the faithfulness witness of Jesus.
Jesus is comparing his holy faithfulness with the unfaithful turning away of many in the end-times who succumb to the deceptions and temptations of the antichrist and his empire.
Every generation is called to be faithful until the very end. We will need to draw on the strength of the Lord to remain firm and resolute in the end-times, that we might be faithful and worthy, to enter the heavenly courts and be seated beside Jesus our King, the Ruler of all creation!
In Jesus’ letter to the church in Laodicea, he is appealing to those who will turn away from their faith, as we shall see as this letter develops.
