Philadelphia 1

This is a series of posts on the letters of Jesus to the seven churches in Revelation 2&3. This is my first post on the church of Philadelphia.. To see all my previous posts on these two chapters, please look down at the end for a full list.

Please either listen to the audio clip above or read the notes below or both at the same time!

Revelation 3:7  “These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no-one can shut and what he shuts no-one can open.”

A simple understanding of this verse is that the key of David allowed its holder to enter the holy city of Jerusalem and the treasure-chambers of the king.

Isaiah records that Eliakim, son of Hiliah was given that honour.

Isaiah 22:22  ‘I will place on his shoulder (Eliakim) the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.’

Jesus holds the key to the Kingdom and he alone decides who can enter and who cannot.

John 14:6   Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.”

Put simply: Jesus holds the keys to our salvation.

Jesus then brings a wonderful message of encouragement to the Philadelphians.

Revelation 3:8  “I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no-one can shut.”

Jesus has seen into the very hearts of these Philadelphians and has joyfully opened the door of salvation and made sure that no enemy can try and shut it again. Their salvation is secure.

Praying this morning for all those in Afghanistan, both the Christians and their neighbours and the Taliban. Praying for those who do not know Jesus, that he would come to them in their dreams and that they would hear the gospel and respond and that Jesus would open the door and they would know the joy of salvation. Praying for all those who are growing disillusioned with Islam, that they would hear of the true God who brings peace rather than bitterness.

Praying too for Gaza, that the gospel would spread through this ravaged place and reach the hearts of the people and free them from their chains.
