The rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem by Nehemiah was birthed in tears and prayers and fasting.
Ten gates are mentioned in Nehemiah chapter 3. The names of the gates looked forward to the gospel and the Messiah Yeshua who was to come. And so we can see how God’s sovereign plan to bring redemption to mankind was birthed from the very beginning.
The gospel of Jesus is embroidered into the very fabric of scripture.

8 The Horse Gate
Nehemiah 3:28 ‘Above the Horse Gate the priests carried out repairs, each in front of his house. After them Zadok the son of Immer carried out repairs in front of his house.
The Horse Gate is on the eastern wall that faces the Mount of Olives.
Horses were used for military purposes. The implication here is that the Church needs to be engaged in spiritual warfare, bearing in mind that we do not fight flesh and blood but rather a spiritual enemy.
Ephesians 6:12 ‘For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.’
We have victory in Christ Jesus!
Revelation 19:11 ‘I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war.’
The Horse Gate therefore pertains to spiritual warfare and the victory of Christ Jesus over the powers of darkness.
I have to confess that I feel rather intimidated when I read or hear about spiritual warfare. It seems that some have entered into a domain of which I know absolutely nothing at all. I will therefore leave it to better folk than me to write about it!
I may not be a specialist expert in spiritual warfare, but nevertheless, by praying for the Lord to return and for the works of the enemy to be defeated, in a simple and rather childish way, I am indeed engaging in spiritual warfare without even knowing it.
Tomorrow is the beautiful East Gate!
To read the previous seven gates:
Gate 1 The Sheep Gate
Gate 2 The Fish Gate
Gate 3 The Old Gate
