Nehemiah’s Gates 7

The rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem by Nehemiah was birthed in tears and prayers and fasting.

Ten gates are mentioned in Nehemiah chapter 3. The names of the gates looked forward to the gospel and the Messiah Yeshua who was to come. And so we can see how God’s sovereign plan to bring redemption to mankind was birthed from the very beginning.

The gospel of Jesus is embroidered into the fabric of scripture.

7   The Water Gate

Nehemiah 3:26  ‘Next to him, Pedaiah son of Parosh and the temple servants living on the hill of ophel made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate towards the east and the projecting tower.’

The Water Gate formed part of the Temple complex and it led to the Gihon Spring which was the main source of water for the city.

The following verse is long but precious and well worth reading.

Nehemiah 8:1When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, all the people assembled as one man in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses which the Lord had commanded for Israel. So on the first day of the seventh month, Ezra the priest brought the Law before the Assembly which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate, in the presence of the men and women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law….Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is sacred to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep. For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.’

This is music to my ears!

Ephesians 5:25  ‘Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain, or wrinkle or any other blemish but holy and blameless.’

Acts 2:42  ‘They devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching…

The Water Gate therefore pertains to the study of scripture and of being washed by the word of God.

There is something rather special about memorizing scripture and allowing it to percolate its way through your body throughout the course of the day. Scripture verses can penetrate and heal hidden wounds, and bring insight and courage where previously there was none.

It begins by remembering just one verse. It involves an element of hard labour, as we constantly have to go back and revise the verse we have just forgotten! This is a discipline that takes time and patience. But my gosh, it is a precious discipline indeed. And one verse leads to two verses, and then three…

In Afghanistan, where carrying a bible is foolish, leaders have memorized large chunks of scripture so that they may still give bible classes in small groups.

To read the previous five gates:

Gate 1 The Sheep Gate

Gate 2 The Fish Gate

Gate 3 The Old Gate

Gate 4 The Valley Gate

Gate 5 The Dung Gate

Gate 6 The Fountain Gate
