Nehemiah’s Gates 6

The rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem by Nehemiah was birthed in tears and prayers and fasting.

Nehemiah 1:3a ‘The wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates have been burned with fire. When I heard these things I sat down and wept. for some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.’

Ten gates are mentioned in Nehemiah chapter 3. The names of the gates looked forward to the gospel and the Messiah Yeshua who was to come. And so we can see how God’s sovereign plan to bring redemption to mankind was birthed from the very beginning.

The gospel of Jesus is embroidered into the fabric of scripture.

6   The Fountain Gate

Nehemiah 3:15  ‘Shallum the son of Col-hozeh, the official of the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate. He built it, covered it and hung its doors with its bolts and its bars, and the wall of the Pool of Siloam at the King’s garden as far as the steps that descend from the city of David

The fountain alludes to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

John 7:37  ‘On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “if anyone is thirsty, let him come and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.’

The Fountain Gate therefore pertains to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. There is no end to the fresh, flowing presence of G-d. We are forever filled with His divine and intimate love.

Psalm 36:6 ‘O Lord, you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast in the abundance of your house, you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life, in your light we see light.’

This fountain of divine presence falls upon all who know Jesus and who have received him as their Lord. But wonderfully, this fountain will also be poured out upon Israel.

Zechariah 13:1On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.’

We rejoice today whenever a single member of Israel comes to know Christ Jesus as their Messiah. We look forward to the blessed day, when Christ Jesus returns in power and glory and the remnant of Israel will know that the one who was pierced upon the cross is their true Saviour.

Zechariah 12:10 ‘And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child’

On that blessed day, both Israel and the Church will become one, united under the fountain of the presence of Jesus Christ the Messiah.

Joel 2:28 And afterwards, I will pour out my Spirit on all people...’

This precious verse was partially fulfilled at Pentecost when the Spirit was poured out upon the fledgling Early Church. It will find its completion when Israel turns to Jesus when he returns in power and glory.

Joel 2:31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Hasten that day. Maranatha!
