Please either listen to the three minute audio clip above or read the notes below or both at the same time!

Revelation 4:2and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it’.

I come from a contemplative background and so this verse is music to my ears. Clearly it is God himself seated on the throne but yet John paints his portrait with sparse yet deft brushstrokes.

God is beyond us in every way. He transcends the confines of our earthly thoughts. Our logic and reason cannot hold him. He confounds our descriptions.

Isaiah 55:8 ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts and neither are your ways my ways declares the Lord’ As the heavens are higher than the earth so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts are higher than your thoughts.’

God mercifully comes to us as the heavenly Father and this is a beautiful way of relating to him. He is the perfect Father. We are His children.

I believe it was CS Lewis who said that no-one ever died from imagining that God is an old man with a long white beard.

And God became man and stood before us that we might more easily understand.

John 1:14 ‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.’

But yet God dwells beyond our concepts and we must be careful not to try to reduce God or attempt to frame Him in our limited thoughts.  God transcends our anthropomorphic descriptions.

Romans 11:33 ‘Oh, the depths of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgements and His paths beyond tracing out!

We have every reason to be blown away with wonder of it all!

Tomorrow we explore God holding the universe in His warm embrace. To be taken there please click here.
